Sidekick LX: new way to rip off children

Sidekick_LX_1.jpg

Okay, I’ve never been a big Sidekick fan; so it’s fair to say I’m not looking at the just announced Sidekick LX with an open mind, but hear me out:

The issue with Sidekicks isn’t that they’re horrible, it’s just that anything a Sidekick does there’s always another handset that can to the exact same thing better at a cheaper price. Like let’s compare this Sidekick LX, which is supposed to be the line’s new flagship product against say the new Blackberry Curve 8320, also available through T-Mobile.

The Sidekick LX has a QWERTY keyboard; so does The Curve. The LX feature AOL Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger. The Curve has AOL, Windows Live, and Yahoo! as well as Google Talk, ICQ, and Blackberry Messenger. The Sidekick has a 1.3 megapixel camera; The Curve has a 2 megapixel camera.

The big brag of the Sidekick LX is that it comes with an upgraded 3.0" WQVGA high-definition LCD display screen and supports up to 4GB of microSD card slot space which would be a fair amount of space… if it actually came included. The big brag of the Blackberry Curve meanwhile is that it has integrated Wi-Fi that aside from browsing can also be used in Wi-Fi hotspots to make phone calls over the internet, saving you valuable cell phone minutes. And when you start walking out of range; GSM automatically kicks in so you won’t have any dropped calls – a gimmick actually tangibly useful.

Yet despite being a better phone and despite targeting a demographic with a far larger purchasing power than the kids who covet Sidekicks; the Blackberry Curve 8320 is actually $50 cheaper. A Sidekick LX is $299 with a two year contact; the Blackberry Curve $249.

Does that make any sense?

the only thing i like about the sidekick is that it automatically saves contacts, emails , notes and pictures onto your tmobile account online...other then that, blackberry all the way.

Yea I have a sk3 also and (I am desperately needing to upgrade) but I can't decide between the curve or LX. Or just wait for the blackberry bold.

Ok first of all what r u talking about sidekick lx is bullcrap? The lx can do amazing things and is more stylish than the blackberry curve. Go get ur ass a sidekick before you go make observations when you don't have the phone nikka

I'm currently using a sidekick lx, and to compare it to the blackberry curve, that alone is an offense to blackberry. The only thing that this stupid sidekick has that's actually better than the blackberry is this stupid screen and wider keyboard, the rest is history. Can't wait to get a curve and dump this piece of trash!!!!!

Arguably, for anyone who actually uses one of these gadgets for email, text, and web, the two most important features would be screen and keyboard. The LX wins on both, although the Curve isn't terrible by any means.

Denise,

If you're old enough to have a son that can use a Sidekick then you're too old for yet another Sidekick. PLEASE GET THE CURVE. You're all grown up now!!!

Great article...Right now I have the sidekick 3. I think it is great, I do indeed want to upgrade my phone.(and give my sk3 to my son) But I am still unsure on whether to get the curve or the Sidekick LX!
